What is your deeper purpose? Is it part of your work in the world? Some of us are fortunate to find and follow our ‘calling’ early in life. However, the majority of us have either ignored our calling or believe we haven’t found it yet. Often when we reach middle age, we experience some kind of wake-up call that makes us stop and decide not to waste anymore time playing small.
I’ve written before about having followed the .....
traditional trail to success only to find myself unhappy, disconnected from myself and wondering if there was more to life. For me, it was this breakdown that lead me to a path that I could never have imagined. I found my calling not through “thinking it through” but by quieting my mind and following my interests, my intuitive hutches and allowing things to be revealed to me. I believe this calling will only become clearer in time. In my case, I don’t believe it’s a ‘one and done’ kind of thing.
Many times, I have found myself swimming in the uncertainty of life; wondering: What’s next? Feeling frustrated with my business not being where I wanted it to be, but I couldn’t stop, I wouldn’t stop, because as Parker Palmer says, it’s the thing “I can’t not do.” In a way, I have become unstoppable when it comes to living my purpose. This spark inside me makes me continue. It’s a part of me. Even if the landscape before me changes; I know from deep within me that I have to do this work.
He explains when our work in the world is more than ‘just a job’ but rather a calling that it becomes our vocation. “Vocation at its deepest level is, "This is something I can't not do, for reasons I'm unable to explain to anyone else and don't fully understand myself but that are nonetheless compelling.” Parker J. Palmer
When we light up from the inside; we make our mark on the world. The process to making our mark however, often takes time, faith and persistence. Sometimes we discount our progress because we have decided that we must complete certain steps before we feel successful. In actuality, when we first discover that light inside; we have achieved a huge unfolding process already. We may actually be shining without our conscious awareness. For example, by taking a leap of faith, your demonstrated courage might just be what inspires someone to do the same. It’s not about being anywhere; some arbitrary final destination. It’s about being in the flow of who you are and riding that river. I know the cliché of “it’s about the journey not the destination” has been over used, but it really does carry great wisdom.
Whether you have experienced the crushing heaviness of a wake-up call or existential crisis that has rocked you to your core or simply decided you’re ready to experience more love and purpose in your life; I am here riding this journey with you.
Once we really start listening to our inner voice, it will lead us on our deeper path. Sometimes it feels like aimless wandering to your analytical mind, but once you find the treasures along the way you will start to see how divinely guided you’ve actually been. To find your calling and allow it to lead your live is one of the most beautiful gifts life gives us. To live your calling is one of the most beautiful gifts you can give back to life itself.
To me it is with such gratitude that I get to walk this path and have found loving supportive people who ‘get it’. To help others find and live their purpose brings me so much meaning. A lovely client of mine once wrote “Thank you for shining your light to show me a path I didn’t even know existed.” As you shine your light you will (even without your knowledge) help others shine theirs. One light bulb doesn’t seem like much, but as the dominos of light switches turn on, we will see more and more illumination on this sometimes dark planet.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”― Marianne Williamson
The world needs you to wake up and shine. It’s time.
